180 Marine delivers a super special boat for a Chicago family!

180 Marine's delivery of a Sprint 750 MKII into Oceanside, California was a huge success! The family flew in from Chicago and Canada for a few days to sail her in sunny southern California. This boat is especially cool because the family dedicated it to their mother, who recently passed. Her love of elephants is reflected in the custom wrap on the boat. The wrap is a nice gradation of elephant hide texture on the floats and main hull. Mom also loved sailing! This Sprint will be heading out to... Read More »

Hard Ship / A Really Great Big Story

Not to miss! Amazing! Three paralyzed men take up one of sailing’s most grueling challenges—a 750-mile race to Alaska through some of the most treacherous and remote waters on the planet. Sailing a Corsair F-27, with no motors allowed and many miles from any help, the competition can be too dangerous for the world’s most fearless sailors. This team is out to prove they have what it takes to finish. A film by Great Big Films. Sidenote: Spike Kane, in this R2K video bought his F-27 from Don... Read More »

5 surprising places that are improving ocean health

It’s always great to see what positive things are being done to protect and better understand our ocean waters. Here's a good report from Conservation International. A tool developed by Conservation Internet and partners to provide governments, communities, and businesses with the data they need to make sustainable decisions about ocean use has given the ocean its annual check-up. Its health “score”: 71 out of 100, the same as last year. While the score, calculated using the Ocean Health... Read More »

Heceta Head Lighthouse and Point Lookout Lighthouse

It's that spooky time of year again! Here's a good read... Built in 1892, by a crew of 58, the Heceta Head Lighthouse stands 56 feet tall and shines a beam viewable up to 21 miles away. In 1978, both the lighthouse and its Keepers Quarters were placed on the National Register of Historic Places for "architectural and historical significance". The honor is no joke either - thanks to the relatively isolated location of Heceta Head, the required building materials had to be shipped in during the... Read More »

We have remarkable sailors in our Pulse fleets

You know what I’m talking about…these are the men, women, and juniors who are talented in ways that are difficult to express, and they tend to be the leaders who are selfless about helping other sailors get better and build their fleets. An example is Bob Webbon, who owns Pulse #27 out of Houston, along with Martin Hamilton. Bob is a former class president for the A-Class Catamarans and he competes all over the country. This year he heads up A-Class District 4, and we’re so fortunate to have... Read More »

Experience a Pulse on the Bay!

SAUSALITO — This new 20-foot model has the same well-engineered structure for folding the amas as the original Corsair, as well as a gin pole and tackle to raise the mast. The boat is also stable enough to be left afloat folded up, which many owners do in between sailing sessions to make getting underway that much easier.   Then there's the boat's performance. In moderate winds, the Pulse 600 is slippery and a joy to knock around in. In strong winds, the boat will be a veritable adrenaline... Read More »

This year's Aspen Open Regatta did not disappoint!

We sailed the Pulse 600 all weekend on a windy mountain lake, it performed very well… a real adrenaline generator and no knockdowns. Can’t say that about the J22s, or the U20’s. On the Pulse 600 going upwind, the high volume leeward float never looked like it would bury itself or create excessive drag. Gusts up to 41 knots, often steady at 20-25, if you call that steady. Below is a shot of a top team on their J22, with my friend Ralph swimming behind the boat. What’s that? Is it an airplane?... Read More »

50/50 Round the Island Race

Mark your calendar for September 16 – 18, 2016 Announcement from Race Organizer, Randy Smyth Yes, this race was ready for a total ‘face lift’. Sailors got tired of racing 100 miles and straggling home at 2 am or later, often missing the finish party. So, to cater to popular demand we have made the following changes: • Hobie 16’s, WETA’s and other modest speed multihulls will start at Sunrise off the Fort Walton Yacht Club’s gazebo. • Corsairs and other larger Multihulls will start somewhat...
